Thai Summer Fair – 6th year On Sunday 2nd August 2009
At The Kings Park, Boscombe, Bournemouth, Dorset.

Introduction:

The Thai Language and Culture School provides an opportunity for children and young people from mixed heritage families (Thai – English) to meet socially and explore Thai culture and language. The Thai school provides two groups:

  • 1. The parent & toddler group provides an intergenerational programme for Thai and English families to develop a cultural awareness of their own heritage and culture. The Thai parent & toddler group provides Thai games, songs & music, language and celebrating festivals e.g. Thai New Year. This group acts as a stepping stone for young children to move into the next age appropriate class.
  • 2. The Thai School provides a class to teach Thai language to children age 5-12 year old and teaches parents how to bring their children up as bilingual. The Thai School provides an annual cultural event; The Thai Summer Fair. The Thai Fair delivers an inclusive, accessible and unique programme of Thai culture, tradition and language. The Fair brings together the growing Thai community as well as attracting local residents and a large number of visitors into the area. Last year the Thai Summer Fair attracted approx. 6,000 people. The Thai festival gives an opportunity to showcase the diverse culture that exists in Bournemouth, providing an array of opportunities for participation and involvement.

Aim / Outcome:

  • 1. The Thai Fair highlights and promotes the Thai school; attracting further members of the Thai community, building a stronger and sustainable Thai School/community.
  • 2. The Thai Fair would also raise the profile of the school to residents and visitors as a whole, raising awareness and support of the Thai School/Community.
  • 3. The Fair provides a great opportunity for the Thai community to come together to celebrate their tradition, culture and language; this meets the aims of the Thai School.
  • 4. The Thai Fair brings in a small amount of funding to help sustain the running costs of the Thai School.
